16/05/13 ESMBA Statement Regarding Administration

In a recent statement from the ESMBA it has been announced that Chairman Chris Hopkins and Competition Secretary Keith Hawkins have taken on the administration for an initial period of one year.  Although it is unclear who is financing their roles the statement does confirm they are being financed by a third party. The full ESMBA statement can be found below.

"Effective as of May 1st, Keith Hawkins and Chris Hopkins will be taking on the administration for an initial period of one year. The concept agreed by the management committee was that with the vast experience held by Chris and Keith it would be possible to enhance the services already provided by the ESMBA   on a more professional and timely basis thus allowing the committee time to focus on future planning and events rather than spending time fire fighting past events as is the case at present.

Keith will concentrate on the insurance aspect as his primary responsibility and Chris will initially set about resurrecting the coaching scheme and all its various aspects.

Keith and Chris will be available on a daily basis between 10.00am and 6.00 pm and can be reached on their usual numbers although there are plans to put an 0845 number in operation thus giving all of our members the ability to make contact at a local call rate charge.

Counties and clubs will be able as part of the operation to call upon both during the weekdays should they wish to put on special functions where they may not have the necessary personnel to operate it

The setting up of this particular administration presents a win win situation for ESMBA as both personnel will be financed by a third party which will save not only on an administration fee being paid but will also allow a saving on some expenses currently being claimed.

The concept being discussed is that it will give the ESMBA an opportunity for the committee to spend more time moving forward and will also give an insight into further savings which can be gained   by slimming down the committee in the future which will have a knock on effect with regard to travelling expenses and future expenses.

Both Keith and Chris are excited about the future and see these steps as positive movement forward for the betterment of our association."

03/05/13 New Devon Umpires

01/05/13 2013/14 Diary Of Events Released

We are now in a position to confirm the County diary for the 2013/14 season. We are just waiting for confirmation from Somerset on whether our Inter County game against them will be played on the 14th or 15th of September. Once the correct date is known the diary will be amended. The full diary can be found on the diary of events page. A PDF version of the diary can also be downloaded here.

The Devon County Committee has also decided that due to the lack of support from clubs, the Champion of Champions will be dropped from this season’s calendar. The entry forms for all the competitions will be sent out to secretaries and posted on the website in the coming weeks.

22/04/13 County AGM Statement

The Devon County AGM was held on Saturday 20th April 2013 at The Isca Bowling Centre in Exeter.  Although attendance was in line with previous years it would have been nice to see more clubs attending.  Thank you for the Clubs that did come and to those who sent their apologies.  Unfortunately a lot of Clubs did not reply to the letter asking if they would be attending which would have helped in planning the meeting.  Perhaps Clubs could help in this matter in the future.  The meeting went smoothly and a full report will be sent to Club Secretaries prior to the 2014 meeting.  The Committee has a familiar look to last year and a full list can be found here.  The Committee were disappointed that no one came forward to represent the North Area as we hoped that this year the area would have the same support as both the East and South/West areas get.  The Committee have the facility to co-opt someone so please can we ask the Clubs in that Area to have a think about putting someone forward.

Please check the web-site over the next few weeks as the Competitions Secretary will be busy arranging next year’s diary and sending out competition entry forms.

Wonford SMBC failed to win the ESMBA Top Club Championship that was held in Torquay this weekend. On Saturday in the group stage, despite a slow start, which saw them defeated by Morley Green from Cheshire, they were able to regroup and qualified in second place. On Sunday morning the Quarter Finals were held and Wonford had to play E57 Rollers from West Midlands who were the winners of their group. Disappointingly for Wonford this was where their journey ended as E57 Rollers won. The West Midlands team went on to win the Club Team Championship.

07/04/13 National Championships Review

Despite some valiant efforts Devon players have returned from the National Championships empty handed. In the Singles on Thursday both Lee Toleman (Wonford) and Tony Main (Yarnscombe) safely navigated their way through the group stages. Tony Main however was beaten in the last 16 10-5 by Jason McLean of Hampshire. Lee Toleman reached the Semi Final before he was beaten 10-1 by David White. In an all Hampshire final, Jason Mclean beat David White 12-8.

On Friday Devon had three Pairs in the competition. Tony Main (Yarnscombe) and Paul Pomeroy (Musbury) failed to get out of their group after only winning one game, however the two remaining teams both qualified. The Devon pair of Lee Toleman and Bronagh Malone eventually succumbed in the last 16 to North Yorkshire’s Sean Conroy and Joseph Newsome with a score of 12-2. James Smith (Wonford) and Michael Ivings (Exeter Nomads) reached the Semi Finals before losing 7-8 to Shropshire’s Allan Williams and Alan Jones. However in the last 32 Shropshire once again proved to be Devon’s nemesis and the Devon trio were defeated 11-3. The Triples was won by Cheshire who beat Shropshire in the Final.

25/03/13 National Mixed Fours & Under 18's Review

Matthew Avery (Yarnscombe) produced a solid performance in the National Under 18’s on Sunday. Matthew safely negotiated his way through the group stage before losing to Mitchell Young (Essex) in the last 16. Mitchell Young who last week won the Singles in the British Isles A Team Championships for England went on to win the National Under 18 title after beating Danny Langdon  (North Yorkshire) 10-5 in the final.

The National Mixed Fours which was held on Saturday, was won by Jayne Rudd, Jacinta & Gareth Townend and Ben Render of North Yorkshire who overcame the Essex rink 6-3 in the final.

17/03/13 West Devon Win Area Challenge

On Saturday, ISCA played host to our annual Area Challenge. This year the format was altered and 10 non-county bowlers were used from each of the three areas and they were split into 1 Singles, 1 Pairs, 1 Triples and 1 Fours. These teams then play all the other areas as well as the Devon County A team. Each win was rewarded with two points and the team with the most shots after all the disciplines had played each match was rewarded with an additional 2 points. Unfortunately the North was unable to raise a team and at the last minute an additional team called the All Stars was drafted in. Thanks must go to those players who formed the All Stars as well as John Smith who managed them throughout the day.

In the first session the East faced the County A Team and came away with 2 points after a 14-8 victory in the singles. The West faced the All Stars and won 18-8 in the Singles and 14-5 in the Triples, they also gained an additional two points after having the most shots and so came away from the opening session with 6 points. In the second session the All Stars took 3 points from the County A Team with a 12-11 victory in the Pairs and a 7-7 draw in the Fours. The East won the battle of the areas after securing 7 points. The East gained these points by winning the Pairs 13-8, the Fours 9-6 and drawing the Triples 8-8. They also gained two points from having the most shots,

In the final session of the day the East faced the All Stars, but they were only able to gain 3points with a 11-9 in the Pairs and a 10-10 draw in the Triples. With the destination of the Area Challenge shield still unclear the West faced the Devon County A Team and the West won the Singles 18-10 and the Fours 12-3. They also had the most shots in the match and therefore gained another 2 points, meaning they took 6 points off the County A Team. After all the points had been added up the Devon County Team had 19 points and the All Stars had 14 points. It was the closest Area Challenge we have had for many years and the result was not known until the last game in the last session, however East Devon were piped to the post after they secured 12 points whilst West Devon secured 15 points.

11/03/13 Devon Teams Defeated in Finals

Both the Devon Premier and A Teams travelled to Northampton on Sunday to compete in their respective finals. The Premier team faced six times champions Cheshire in the main ICC final. Devon started of confidently by winning both the Singles and with one Pairs drawing Devon had a 5-3 advantage after the first session. The second session was tied with Devon winning one Triples and one Fours, Whilst Cheshire won on the other two mats. This ensured that at half time Devon led 9-7.

However Cheshire were determined to hold on to their crown and came out all guns blazing in the third session and Devon only won a solitary Pairs match. With Cheshire also gaining the bonus points in the Singles and Pairs Devon had it all to do in the final session. At one stage it looked like Devon might pull it off as with a couple ends left to play they were winning on three of the mats and looked good for the bonus points. However Cheshire pulled away in one Triples game and took the bonus points. In the fours, Devon won one and lost one but gained the bonus points. With Devon gaining the bonus points in the Fours the final score was Devon 17 (156 shots) Cheshire 23 (188 shots). Congratulations must go to Cheshire, with this remarkable achievement of being ICC Champions seven seasons running.

The A Team was also in action against Hampshire in the A Team Consolation Cup Final. It was unfortunately a disastrous start for Devon where they lost on all four mats. It was a much better performance in the second session where Devon won one and drew the Triples and also secured victory in one of the Fours. This meant that Devon trailed 11-5 at the half way stage.

However a disappointing third session with Devon only winning one Pairs match ensured that Hampshire came away with the victory. With nothing to play for Devon had a strong final session with victories on three of the four mats their solitary defeat coming in one of the Fours. With Devon gaining the bonus points in the Triples and Fours the final score was Devon 17 (156 shots) Hampshire 23 (185 shots).

Hertfordshire took the early initiative in the first session with Devon only managing a draw in one of the Pairs and victory in one of the Singles and were defeated on the remaining two mats. Devon however responded immediately in the second session where they managed victories on three out of the four mats. Their sole defeat coming in one of the Triples.

At half time Devon had a slight advantage with the score at 9-7. Devon continued putting the pressure on in the third session where they again secured three important victories, with both of the Pairs and one of the Singles winning. With Devon ahead they knew they needed 4 points out of a possible 12 in the last session. This was duly achieved with victories in one of the Triples and one of the Fours. With Devon picking up the bonus points in the Pairs and Fours the final score was Devon 23 (171 shots) Hertfordshire 17 (168 shots) and the Devon A Team progress to their second final in two years.

On Sunday the Devon Premier faced Essex in the Semi Final of the ICC Championships. The first session was evenly split with Devon winning one of the Singles and one of the Pairs and Essex winning the remaining two games. Devon was able to gain a slight advantage in the second session though with victories in one of the Triples and one of the Fours, whilst the remaining Fours drew. This gave Devon a lead of 9-7 at half time.

Just like the A team did the previous day, the Premier team pushed on in the third session with tight victories in one of the Singles and both of the Pairs, however Essex were able to keep the pressure on by claiming the bonus points in the two disciplines. Devon were still leading by two points and knew that six points in the last session would see them through. The Triples were both defeated, but they did win one bonus point. However Devon secured victory with narrow wins in both of the Fours. With Devon gaining the bonus points in the Fours and sharing the bonus points in the Triples the final score was Devon 22 (169 shots) Essex 18 (175 shots).

The advantage swung further towards Yarnscombe in the Triples where Yarnscombe won 10-7. It therefore came down to the Fours and on the Penultimate end Totnes led 12-5 and adnvantage of just one shot. On the final end it all came down to Yarnscombe’s skip Tony Main’s last wood who pushed his way through the head to pick up 3 and ensured Yarnscombe became County Team champions.

Victor went on to end up as the runner up after reaching the final before losing 10-8 to Norwegian’s Morten André Coll.

This left Simon in third place and he missed out on a place in the main knockouts, instead he qualified for the Plate competition. Despite the disappointment of not qualifying for the main knockout competition Simon went on to win the Plate. In the final he faced Swede Stig Albrektsson, a competitor he faced in his group. It was a similar result with Simon winning 12-7.

After the weekends results Simon dropped down the rankings from first to joint second. 12/12/12-ESMBA Withdraws From The BDA

The ESMBA have withdrawn from the Bowls Development Alliance. The BDA worked to develop the sport of bowls across several codes and aimed to help provide access to funds for the development of the game. However it was criticised by some quarters with their target of bringing older people into the game and not younger players.

Earlier in the year the ESMBA declared their intention to withdraw from the BDA and this has been ratified in the recent ESMBA management committee meeting. They felt a four year commitment with a financial commitment of £18,000 plus a further £15,500 toward the coaching scheme could not be justified to the ESMBA membership in light of the results from the last four years.

In addition the ESMBA have today announced they are joining the Association of Bowling Codes (ABC), which is a newly formed organisation that hopes to provide mutual co-operation between codes to promote the sport at an affordable and amicable level. For the full statement please visit the ESMBA website here.

The first session was a tie with both counties winning one Singles and one Pairs game. However Devon took control of the match in the second session where the Triples and Fours secured victories on all four mats. At the half way stage Devon had a lead of eight points with the score being 12-4. Devon was able to keep the pressure up in third session, where they only lost one Singles game, but won the remaining three games securing a further six points. Dorset had a strong final session and Devon only gained three points after a solitary victory in one of the Triples and a draw in one of the Fours. However the damage had been done in the earlier sessions and with Devon securing the bonus points in the Singles, Pairs, Triples and sharing the Fours bonus points the final score was Devon 28 (185 shots) Dorset 12 (146 shots).

The A Team produced their best performance of the season with a resounding victory. Devon were dominant from the start and in the first session only dropped one point where they won on three out of the four mats and secured a draw in the remaining Pairs game. Devon carried this form into the second session where they won on all four mats. At Half time Devon was ahead 15-1. In the third session Devon secured a further two wins with wins in one Singles game and one Pairs game. Devon dominated the final session of the day where they won three out of the four games, the solitary defeat coming in one of the Triples. The Devon Premier Team now look ahead to the main knockout competition after winning the group. The Devon A Team leaped of the bottom of the table with their dominant victory against Dorset and finished third and go into the Consolation Cup. Both teams now wait for the remaining ICC group fixtures to be completed and for the ESMBA to publish the draw.

02/12/11-County/National Singles Preliminaries & Under 18's

Over the last two Sundays the County/National Singles Preliminaries have taken place at ISCA. With eighteen groups, players were placed into groups of either four or three and the winners of each group along with the fourteen highest runners up have qualified for the final thirty two which takes place on the 9th February. The qualifiers can be found here.

Also today at ISCA we had the under 18’s County Competition. With only two entrants there was only the need of a final. This was held between Matthew Avery (Yarnscombe) and Luis Inacio (Bere Alston) with Matthew winning 14-2. It is always a joy seeing younger bowlers and it is a shame that there is not as many entrants into this competition as there used to be, hopefully this will improve in future seasons.

The ESMBA have recently announced the membership totals for this season. Total national membership has experienced another fall with 21085 members a drop of 755 members (roughly 3%). Devon bucked this trend and has seen an increase of 53 members (2.4%) and there are now 2285 registered members in Devon. Devon continues to have the most members in the ESMBA with just under 11% of the total national membership. Despite Devon’s figures it is a worrying trend to see the national membersip decrease for a further year. The full figures can be seen on the ESMBA site here.

19/11/12 British Isles Championship Review

It was a disappointing weekend for England at this year’s British Isles Championships, which was held at Potters this weekend. England’s solitary success was in the Individual Triples where Ed Sawbridge, Chris Weston & Chris Hopkins beat the Irish, skipped by renowned Ray Stubbs in their final match 14-13 to secure the title. Wales won the Singles, whilst Ireland won the Fours and Pairs.

Devon’s Michael Ivings (Exeter Nomads) was selected in the one of the rinks for the team event and he lined up alongside Jacinta Townend (North Yorkshire), Matt Sifford (Essex) and David Wiggins (Oxfordshire). Many see the team event as the blue ribbon event of the championships and England were looking to make history by becoming the first English team to defend the title.

England faced Wales in their first game on Saturday and although England did go into an early lead, Wales started to crawl the shots back and eventually finished with a 35-29 victory with Michael’s rink suffering a narrow 9-8 loss. On Sunday England faced Scotland knowing that a big victory was needed to put pressure on the other teams in the contest. This was achieved with an impressive 63-15 win with Michael’s rink winning 15-4. With Ireland beating Wales this meant that England could still become champions if they beat Ireland. However Ireland wanted revenge after England beat them last year and they started off strongly and after just the first end on all four mats Ireland led by 9 shots. Ireland continued to pile on the pressure through out the game and eventually won 46-30, with Michael’s rink finishing with a 14-8 defeat. This ensured that Ireland won the team event and Wales finished as runners up. Whilst after suffering two defeats England disappointingly finished in third place.

Michael was not the only Devon representative at this year Championships, with Umpires Ian McLennan and Ken Griffiths umpiring throughout the tournament.

Devon travelled down to Carnmoggas IBC on Sunday to face Cornwall in their fifth game of the season and the Premier Team looked to secure top spot in the group. In the first session Devon secured one win in each of the two disciplines. The second session was also all-square with Devon securing a win in the Triples and in the Fours but losing the two remaining games. At the halfway stage it was all level at 8-8. Devon stepped it up in the afternoon and in the third session won on three mats, the sole defeat coming in one of the Singles. Devon’s dominance continued in the final session of the day with another three victories from the four games, the sole defeat coming in one of the Fours. With Devon winning the bonus points in the Pairs and sharing the bonus in the Triples the final score was Cornwall 17 (168 shots) Devon 23 (183 shots).

It was another difficult day for the A Team. In the first session Devon only managed one win and that was in the Pairs. The other remaining Pair lost, whilst there were defeats for both of Devon’s Single players. Cornwall increased their dominance in the second session with wins on all four mats. This left the score at halftime a disappointing 2-14 to Cornwall. The third session was even with Devon securing wins in one Singles match and one Pairs game, whilst Cornwall had wins on the remaining two mats. In the final session of the day Devon won three out the four games, with Devon victorious in both of the Fours and one of the Triples. Unfortunately this comeback was too little too late and with Devon only gaining the Bonus points in the Pairs the final score was Cornwall 26 (185 shots) Devon 14 (177 shots).

The Premier Team have secured top spot in the league with one game remaining and go into the knock out stages. Dorset, Somerset and Cornwall will all believe they can get second spot. It has proved to be a disappointing season for the A Team after last year’s heroics and they sit at the bottom of the table with the one game left to play. Realistically they will look to regroup, enter the consolation cup and rebuild for next season. The latest group table can be found here.

Devon next entertain Dorset on the 1st of December in this seasons final group game. The game will be played at ISCA in Exeter and spectators are welcome.

06/11/12-Somerset v Devon Result

Devon travelled to Taunton on Sunday to face Somerset in the latest ICC fixture of the season. It turned out to be the Premier Team toughest game this season so far. In the first session of the day Devon gained an advantage with three wins out of four, the solitary defeat coming in one of the Singles. The second session was all tied with Devon winning one of the Triples and one of the Fours but losing on the other two games. This left the score 10-6 to Devon at half time. In the third session Somerset came back into the match with Devon only winning one Pairs and one of the Singles drew, meaning they only gained three points. Devon though responded in the final session of the day winning both the Fours and one of the Triples meaning they won six out of the available eight points. With Devon gaining the bonus points in the Fours and sharing the bonus in the Pairs the result was Somerset 18 (173 shots), Devon 22 (162 shots).

It was another tough day for the A Team. The first session was very even with one Pairs and one Singles winning. The second session was a disaster for Devon with defeats on all four mats. This left the half time score at 12-4 to Somerset, however with their hopes slipping away Devon rallied in the second half. In the third session Devon picked up five out of the eight available points with wins in one Singles and one Pairs, whilst the other Singles drew and the other Pairs was narrowly defeated. In the final session Devon was undefeated with two wins in the Fours and two draws in the Triples. With Devon gaining the bonus points in the Singles and Pairs the final score was Somerset 21 (167 shots) Devon 19 (165 shots).
