21/05/14 Somerset Under 18's v Devon Under 18's Report

On Sunday 18th May, Eric Pavey & David Summers accompanied by A Team Captain Robert Ivings took a 10 strong team of under 18’s representing Devon to Comeytrowe Village Hall, Taunton to play the return fixture against Somerset.  At the start of the event during the line up, all the Under 18’s was presented with a Devon County badge. The teams of two triples and a four played on fast mats. In the first session Devon had a clean sweep winning on all mats.

After the break of tea and cake, the second session, Somerset had a further player arrive, so to make up the numbers, a parent, Steve Ferris, stepped in, so thank you to him. After a change around in the teams, Devon didn’t have this session all their own way, but did win overall 4 – 2, so very well done to them all.

Once again both teams enjoyed the afternoon, hopefully they learned a little more about playing competitive bowls. Big thank you to Somerset for hosting the event, and thanks to Christina & Alan George for their help in getting the communications going with the Somerset team.

The next competition is a three way affair between, Devon, Somerset & Dorset on August 31st at Bere Regis.

It would be good to see some of the under 18’s trial for the County A team, during the summer.

30/03/14 County AGM Report

The Devon County AGM was held on Saturday 29th March 2014 at The Wonford Community Hall in Exeter.  Although attendance was in line with previous years it would have been nice to see more clubs attending.  Thank you for the Clubs that did come and to those who sent their apologies. Sadly a lot of Clubs did not reply to the letter asking if they would be attending which would have helped in planning the meeting.  Perhaps Clubs could help in this matter in the future.  The meeting went smoothly and a full report will be sent to Club Secretaries in the near future.  The Committee has a familiar look to last year and a full list can be found here

After the AGM this season’s trophy presentation took place. The Roll of Honour has been fully updated with this season’s winners and it can be found here.

26/03/14 ESMBA Rule On The Use Of Rubber Coated Jacks

Recently the County Committee have been getting enquiries about the use of jacks with rubber coating and whether they conform to ESMBA rules. The ESMBA through their website have issued a statement confirming that the use of these jacks are not permitted in any ESMBA competition at any level. The statement can be read below.

"Please note that the ESMBA does not endorse the jacks that are being sold with a rubber coating. These non-chip jacks do not respond in the same way as our jacks do when they are hit by a wood as they absorb the impact. The use of these jacks is therefore not permitted for ESMBA competitions at any level."

It was better news in the National Under 18's on Sunday where Andrew Smith (Wonford) came through the group stage and qualified for the main knock out stage. He reached the quarter finals before being defeated 11-6 by the eventual winner Callum Beale of Northamptonshire.

17/03/14 Open Day Review

On Saturday 15th March Devon County SMBA held an Open Day at Isca Bowling Centre when members were invited to join some of the County Team to learn more about tactics and building heads in a game. We had no idea how many would takeup the offer but the response was tremendous , far more than we anticipated. However we decided to go ahead with the rather large number and do our best. We had several under-18's which was really great for the future of the game and also older players who having played for many years still felt they had something to learn. It was a very tiring day for everyone but judging from the comments and e mails we received afterwards most people took something away from the day. When players get back to their Clubs we hope they will be able to put into practice some of the things that they learnt. We also hope it will inspire them to enter more competition to improve their game.

17/03/14 East Devon Win Area Challenge

On Sunday ISCA hosted the annual Area Challenge. The event sees each of the Area Representatives pick 1 Singles, 1 Pairs, 1 Triples and 1 Fours from their area, these players are all non county players. These teams then play all the other areas as well as the Devon County A team. Each win was rewarded with two points and the team with the most shots after all the disciplines had played each match was rewarded with an additional 2 points.

In the first session of the day the East faced the County A team and came away with 3 points. These were gained from a 10-10 draw in the Singles and a 14-11 win in the Pairs. The North faced the West and the North won the Pairs 20-9, the Triples 14-9 and the Fours 14-6. With a superior shot difference the North also gained 2 additional points, giving them 8 points from the match.

In the second session the North faced the County A team with the Pairs winning 21-8 and the Fours winning 13-3. With the shot difference equal after the four games the 2 bonus points were shared. The East dominated the match between the West winning a total of 8 points. The Pairs won 11-10, the Triples won 12-4 and the Fours won 11-5. The one bright spot for the West was the 18-8 win in the Singles. With a much superior shot difference the East picked up the bonus points.

In the final session of the day the West area played the County A team. The West Singles continued his fine form throughout the day and made it three wins out of three after winning 15-8. However that was the only win of the session for the West. The Devon County A team finished the day with 20 points. The East faced the North in the match that would decide the outcome of the day. The first two games was shared with the North winning the Singles 15-13 and the East winning the Pairs 19-8. However the East dominated the last two games with an 11-7 win in the Triples and a 9-6 win in the Fours. At the end of the day the West had won. After All the points had been added up the County A team had 20 points. It was another thrilling Area Challenge with the destination of the shield only being decided in the last game. 04/03/14 Devon Under 18's v Somerset Under 18's Report

Uffculme Bowls Club and Christina & Alan George played host for Devon under 18’s against Somerset today. The afternoon got underway in front of approximately 50 guests including parents, Grandparents & Families of all the Under 18’s from both County’s. David Summer’s & Eric Pavey put together teams of 4 from the 12 from all over the County. The teams played on 2 mats, giving them the opportunity to show they were prepared for any challenge that Somerset put in front of them. Whilst waiting for a couple of the team from Somerset, they played a Triple and a Four, from which both Devon teams won over 7 ends. After a short break for refreshments play continued with both games being four’s, resulting in 2 more wins for Devon. Whilst the tea continued to flow for the adults, teams were readjusted and the final 2 games were tighter affairs with a win to each County.

The overall result for the afternoon’s bowls was 5 games to Devon and 1 to Somerset, 49 shots to 28. So a very successful afternoon, we all felt that it was a win for both Counties in as much as it was good for the under 18’s to play competitive bowls. Hopefully this will continue on into the future, and maybe for organiser’s to look at similar events with other bordering Counties. These under 18 bowlers are the future of the game, so we want to encourage and support as much as possible. In talking to all who took part today, they said they had really enjoyed the afternoon, and they gave thanks to those who had put the time in to the organisation.

It was a very difficult second session for Devon and with only one of the Fours winning the task was looking increasingly difficult. At the half way stage Devon trailed Somerset 10-6. The third session provided Devon with a glimmer of hope, with Devon only losing one Pairs. Devon won the remaining Pairs, one of the Singles and drew the other Singles. With the bonus points Devon gained 9 points from the third session and went into the final session knowing they needed to win both of the Fours, one of the Triples and gain 11 more shots. Despite their best efforts both of the Triples lost and although both of the Fours were victorious it was not enough and players left the mats knowing that Devon had not qualified for the main knockout stages for the first time in the association's history. The final score was Somerset 19 (178 shots) Devon 21 (182 shots).

The A team got off to a comfortable start in the first session, with two close victories in the Singles which meant that despite two defeats in the Pairs the score was level. The second session was also split evenly with Devon winning the one Triples and one Fours but losing the other two games. At the half way the scores were tied at 8-8 and Devon needed to gain just 7 more points in the afternoon sessions. However the third session belonged to Somerset with Devon losing both of the Singles and only winning one of the Pairs. Devon went into the final session knowing they needed to get 5 points. With both of the Triples winning easily and one of the Fours winning this was achieved. With Devon getting the bonus points in the Triples the final score was Somerset 22 (183 shots) Devon 18 (162 shots).

With the Premier team not qualifying for the main knockout stages all eyes will be on the A team as they try to win the title that they won two years ago. The draw will be publicly announced once all the ICC group games are completed and details will be posted here. The final group standings for both teams can be found here.
