Over the past few days the 2015 National Championships have been held in Church Gresley Derbyshire and Devon was represented in every discipline. On Thursday in the Singles both James Smith (Wonford) and Lee Toleman (Awliscombe) both qualified safely through the group stage. However James Smith lost to Keith Hawkins (Somerset) 14-6in the first knockout stage. Whilst Lee Toleman reached the quarter final before being beaten 10-6 by Ben Pay (Hampshire). The Singles was won by Ryan Knight (Gloucester) who beat John Skelding (Staffordshire) 11-5 in the final.
On Friday Bronagh Malone & Lee Toleman (Awliscombe) and Michael Ivings (Exeter Nomads) & James Smith (Wonford) represented Devon in the Pairs and both teams won their groups and qualified for the knockout stages. Michael & James were knocked out in the last 32 after an extra end by Craig Burgess & Mitchell Young (Essex) 12-4. Lee and Bronagh battled on and reached the final where they faced Simon White & Grant Soller (Cheshire) and won 10-7 to become National Pairs champions. Well done guys!
In the Fours on Saturday Devon had two entries, and both teams won their respective group. Both teams reached the last 16, but that was the end of the road for the Yarnscombe quartet of Graham & Elliott James, Michael Avery and Tony Main as they lost to the Cheshire rink. Michael Ivings, Paul Pmeroy, James Trott (both Musbury) and James Smith reached the semi final before being squeezed out by the West Midlands 9-2. The Fours was won by Cornwall who won their first national title by beating the West Midlands 10-7.
On
Sunday
there was two Devon teams in the National Triples, Simon Pridham,
Bronagh
& Lee Toleman unfortunately failed to make it out of the group
stage after
only winning one game. However the remaining team of James Trott,
Paul Pomeroy
and Michael Ivings qualified
after winning their group. They continued
winning until they reached the quarter final where they were beaten
by one shot
after an extra end by West Midlands. The title was won by Oxforshire
who beat
Gloucester 8-7 in the final.

After narrowly getting through the group stage on shots they progressed all the way to the semi-finals where they were knocked out by the West Midlands Rink. The Mixed Fours was won by Oxfordshire.
Devon had 3 participants in the National Under 18’s which took place on Sunday. Benny Bass (Uffculme) narrowly finished 3rd in his group and went on to play for the Woodbridge Trophy which is a plate competition for players who did not qualify for the main competition, however he was knocked out in round 3. 23/03/15 Totnes Creameries Win County Team Championship
On Sunday the 8 qualifying teams converged onto ISCA to take part in this County Team Championship final stage. The teams were split into two groups with the winners and runners qualifying for the semi-final stage. Yarnscombe won group 1 after winning all their games and they were joined by Abbotskerswell. Exeter Nomads won group 2 after winning two games and drawing against 2nd place Totnes Creameries. The first semi-final was a repeat of last year’s final and once again it was tight. After Totnes won the Pairs and Triples and Yarnscombe won the Singles and Fours the match was tied on disciplines as well as shots. Therefore the Fours had to play an extra end which was won by Totnes Creameries. The other semi-final was a more sedate affair with Exeter Nomads winning the first three disciplines against Abbotskerswell and comfortably moved into the final.
The final was again tight with 2 disciplines won by each
club, with Totnes Creameries winning the Pairs and Fours and Exeter
Nomads
winning the Singles and Triples. However Totnes Creameries aided by a
14 -1
victory in the Fours won on shots. Therefore after 2 years as being
runners up,
Totnes Creameries have become the County Team champions.

17/03/15 The South Retain The St Georges Cup
The South once again retained the St Georges cup for the
fourth year running and it was much comfier than last year’s draw.
This year it
was close until the Singles played, but the South pulled away from the
North winning
26 out of the 32 Singles matches. The final score was 44.5-19.5 to the
South.
16/03/15 North Area Win Area Challenge
On Sunday ISCA hosted the annual Area Challenge. The event sees each of the Area Representatives pick 1 Singles, 1 Pairs, 1 Triples and 1 Fours from their area, these players are all non county players. These teams then play all the other areas as well as the Devon County A team. Each win was rewarded with two points and the team with the most shots after all the disciplines had played each match was rewarded with an additional 2 points.
In the first session of the day the East Area faced the County A Team and the County A team came away with the maximum 8 points. The North faced the West and the North came away with wins in the Singles, Pairs and Triples. The second session saw the North face the County A Team and were able to win the Singles as well as the Pairs. However the County was dominant in the Triples and Fours and secured the bonus points. The East Area won the Fours and Triples against the West Area and also did enough to secure the two bonus points.
In
the final session of the day the West Area faced the Devon
County A team. With the County Team in celebratory mood after their
title
victory last week they were able to win on all four mats. The County
A team
finished with 26 points and the West finished on 6 points. Defending
champions
the East Area needed a confident victory over the North Area if they
were to
retain their title. However the North Area won in the Singles,
Triples and Fours. The East finished with
8 points but the North finished on 20 points which was enough to
bring the title back to the North after a 6 season absence.

09/03/15 Devon Win ICC A Team Championship
On Sunday Devon A travelled up to Daventry where they
faced
Essex in the final of the Inter County Championship. The first session
was
evenly split with both counties winning one of the Singles and one of
the
Pairs, however Essex were slightly up in shots in both of the
disciplines. The second
session proved to be pivotal and Devon were able take control of the
match
after they confidently won both of the Triples and both of the Fours.
This left
the half time at 12-4 to Devon.
In the third session Devon were able to extend their advantage even further after both of the Pairs won and turned over the shot difference to win the bonus points, whilst one Singles also won. Devon went into the final session knowing that they just needed one point to reach the 21 points that would guarantee victory. Although it was a slow start by Devon this was achieved once both of the Triples had finished. Although both Triples lost they were up in shots after their great performance in the second session and so secured the 2 points that was wanted. More points came to Devon in the final session when one of the Fours also won. With Devon picking up the bonus points in the Pairs, Triples and Fours the final score was Devon 26 (169 shots) Essex 14 (157 shots).
The A Team squad that
faced Essex with the trophy
Congratulations to the A team for bringing the trophy back to Devon after a 3 year absence. Thanks must also go to all the supporters that have followed the team and have given the team tremendous support.
The headline news in the other ICC finals is that
Cheshire 8
year reign is over. They were facing Hampshire in the Premier team
final and
going in to the final session Cheshire were looking secure however a
magnificent
fight back by Hampshire ensured they won 21-19. In the Premier
Consolation
shield final Dorset beat local rivals Somerset 28-12, whilst in the A
Team
Consolation Norfolk beat Gloucester 28-12.

09/02/15 Tri County Junior Competition
Hosted this time by Devon at the Isca centre on Sunday, each county Somerset, Dorset and Devon, put out two teams of four players. In the first session Devon got off to a good start with two wins, Somerset took the points in one game, leaving Dorset to get off the mark. They did this in the second session with two wins, one game going to Somerset and nothing for Devon, this left the scores all equal.
After a short lunch break for the third session, all points remained equal with all three counties winning a game each, but Somerset had a slender lead on shots. In the fourth and last session saw Devon take control and winning both games and Dorset wining just one.
The overall scores for the day was, Somerset 3 points 66 shots, Dorset 4 points 64 shots and Devon 5 points 71 shots A very good hard fought out days bowling by all young members, the games were played in good positive spirit and are a credit to their counties.
Thanks to both Somerset and Dorset for coming and to the parents for their support. Also we had a visit from the England under 21 manager, who was delighted with some of the bowls that was played, and he was very keen for some of the young people to think about trialling for England.
These are the future of our sport, so keep on bowling. If you are under 21 and have not been involved with County, and would like to play in future, please contact Eric Pavey through your club’s secretary, or you can find his details on the Devon web site, he would be very pleased to hear from you.

26/01/15 Devon Preliminary Round Results
Both Devon county teams faced a preliminary in the latest round of ICC fixtures. The Premier team travelled to Guildford in Surrey where they faced the West Midlands. It was a slow start by Devon in the first session with one of the Pairs winning. However the other Pairs and both of the Singles were defeated. The second session was more even and Devon enjoyed big wins in one of the triples and one of the Fours, but were defeated on the other two mats. This left the West Midlands with a 10-6 lead at the halfway stage. The third session was also split evenly. Both of the Pairs won their games and in doing so also secured the 2 extra bonus points, but this was counteracted with both of the Singles losing. This meant with Devon 16-12 a big last session was needed and with a few ends left in each mat 3 of the games were very tight. The first Triples that finished were pegged back to a draw and when the other Triples were defeated the West Midlands had done enough to secure victory. The final score was Devon 14 West Midlands 26 and the West Midlands now face Hampshire in the quarter finals.
The A team had to travel to Didcot where they faced
Buckinghamshire. The first session was split evenly with one of the
Singles
winning and one of the Pairs winning. Devon were able to gain an
advantage in
the second session with both of the Triples and one of the fours
securing
victories. This left the half time score 10-6 to Devon. Devon
continued
to
strengthen their grip on the game in the third session where they
again
won on
three mats with both of the pairs winning and one of the Singles
edging
victory
by 1 shot. The last session of the day was split evenly with Devon
enjoying a
14-6 win in one of the Triples and a 12-0 win in one of the Fours.
With
Devon
securing the bonus points in the Pairs, Triples and Fours the Final
score was
Devon 26 (183 shots) Buckinghamshire 14 (149 shots). Devon A now
travel
to
Bristol on the 15th of February where they face Kent.

James
winning
15-4. In the other semi-final Lee Toleman faced Elliott James and
this
was a
tight affair although Lee led most of the time and Lee eventually

01/12/14 Devon v Somerset Report
Sunday saw Somerset travel down to ISCA to face Devon in the final Inter County group game. The Premier team entered the game knowing that if Cornwall gained 11 points away to Dorset and if they gained at least 18 points against Somerset they would qualify for the main draw. It was a very tight first session with both of the Pairs drawing, one of the Singles winning 14-10 and the other singles losing. Somerset gained the initiative in the second session with a strong performance that saw them win one of the Triples and both of the Fours. This left the half time score at 6-10 to Somerset. Devon did regain the initiative in the third session with only one defeat on three out of the four mats with the only defeat coming in one of the Pairs. Devon went into the final session knowing they needed 2 points and this was achieved with a draw in one of the Triples and a draw and victory in the two Fours games. With Devon gaining the bonus points in the Singles and Pairs the final score was Devon 20 (161 shots) Somerset 20 (153 shots). In the other group game Cornwall beat Dorset 26-14 meaning they topped the group with Devon coming second.
Devon A and Somerset A had already both qualified and the match would decide who came first and who came second. Going into the match Devon were ahead of Somerset by 3 points. Like the Premier team the first session was tied, with both Singles were defeated but both of the Pairs won. It was a disappointing second session however with defeats on all four mats. This left Somerset in control at half time with them leading 4-12. However Devon responded in the third session with themselves winning on all four mats. This put the initiative back with Devon and they only needed 3 points from the final session, this was achieved with victories in one of the Triples and one of the Fours. With Devon winning the bonus points in the Singles, Pairs and the Triples the final score was Devon 22 (179 shots) Somerset 18 (161 shots). The other group fixture saw Cornwall beat Dorset 25-15. With both Devon Premier and Devon A qualifying for the main knockout draw they now face a wait for the ESMBA to announce who they will be facing.

17/11/14 British Isles Review
It was a successful weekend for the Devon players who were in the England squad playing in the British Isles. James Smith, Bronagh and Lee Toleman represented England in the Individual Triples. In the first game they were narrowly defeated by Ireland 13-11, however a 17-5 victory against Wales kept them in the hunt and they went into the final game knowing that there was still a chance. With the Devon trio despatching Scotland comfortably 21-7 it all rested on the result of the other mat and when Wales beat Ireland 16-10 it was enough to secure the title on shots.
England had more success over the weekend and also won the Individual Pairs and Individual Fours. However in the Team event which features four rinks England came second to Ireland. England also picked up the Ronnie McDermott Bowl which is awarded to the team who performed the best throughout the whole weekend.
17/11/14 Margaret Elliot Pairs Review

10/11/14 Somerset v Devon Report
Devon travelled to Taunton to face Somerset in their final away game of the group stage. With Devon Premier leading the way in their group they entered the game knowing a good result would help them secure passage into the main knockout draw. However it was a slow start with Devon just winning one mat in the first session of the day and that was an11-9 win in one of the Pairs. The second session which features the Triples and Fours was better with one of the Triples winning 12-5, one of the Fours winning 10-4 and the other Fours drawing which ensured Devon gained 5 out of the 8 points available in that session. At the halfway stage Somerset led Devon 9-7. Sadly another poor session in the Singles and Pairs after lunch which saw Devon win one of the Pairs and draw one of the Singles put Somerset in a strong position. Somerset were able to capitalise on their advantage in the final session of the day and Devon were only able to win one of the Triples and draw one of the Fours. With Devon only winning the bonus points in the Fours the final result was Somerset 25 (195 shots) Devon 15 (158 shots).
Devon A had a reasonable start to the day with the first session of the day split evenly with both Devon Singles winning but both Devon Pairs losing. The second session was very similar with Devon winning one of the triples 11-6 and one of the Fours 12-3. However defeats on the remaining two mats ensured at half time the score was split evenly 8-8. Devon struggled in the third session of the day with Somerset winning on all four mats. In the final session of the day Devon responded and managed to win both of the Triples and one of the Fours. With Devon gaining the bonus points in both the Triples and the Fours the final score was Somerset 22 (166 shots) Devon 18 (160 shots).
In the other group game Dorset travelled down to Cornwall. Cornwall Premier secured a massive 31-9 win, whilst Cornwall A won 24-16 and the latest league tables can be found here. In the Premier team Cornwall now top the group with Devon moving down to second place. A good result against Somerset in the final group game of the season should ensure progress into the main knockout draw. The A team have now mathematically secured passage into the next round and the final game against Somerset will decide who tops the table. The final group game takes place at ISCA on 30th of November.

27/10/14 Devon v Cornwall Report
On Sunday Devon faced Cornwall at ISCA in the latest round of the ICC. After defeat against Dorset both teams were looking to get back to winning ways. The Devon Premier team had a confident start and in the first session narrowly won both of the Pairs as well as one of the Singles. The second session was split evenly with Devon winning one of the Triples 15-10 and one of the Fours 9-3 however Cornwall were victorious on the remaining two mats. This left the score at half time 10-6 to Devon. This advantage was maintained in the third session of the day which was again split evenly. Cornwall won both of the Singles but Devon won both of the Pairs. Devon wrapped up victory in the final session of the day which again was very even. Devon managed to win one of the Fours and one of the Triples but lost on the other two mats. With Devon winning the bonus points in the Pairs and Fours and sharing the bonus points in the Triples the final score was Devon 23 (183 shots) Cornwall 17 (166 shots).
The Devon A team had a very similar start to the Premier team and in the first team also picked up three wins, the sole defeat coming in one of the Singles matches. Devon was able gain even more control in the second session with another 3 victories with both of the Triples winning as well as one of the Fours. At the halfway stage Devon led Cornwall 12-4. Devon. Devon ensured victory was theirs in the third session where they totally dominated the session with victories on all fours mats. With the game won Devon went into the last session trying to maximise their point total. The session was split with Devon winning both of the Triples but Devon confidently winning both of the Fours. With Devon winning the bonus points in both of the Singles, Pairs and Fours the final score was Devon 30 (190 shots) Cornwall 10 (149 shots).

20/10/14 Dorset v Devon Report
On Sunday both Devon teams travelled to the Dorset Golf and Country Club where they faced Dorset in the latest ICC group fixtures. Both teams have started their seasons dominantly but this game would prove to be a sterner job. The Premier started of very poorly and in the first session only won on one mat and that was a 13-11 in one of the Singles. The second session was also disappointing with defeats on all four mats which left the score 14-2 to Dorset at half time. Devon did respond in the first afternoon session with wins in both of the Pairs and one of the Singles meaning Devon entered the final session of the day with a chance of a comeback. However Dorset grip tightened throughout the last session and Devon only one game out of the fours mats which was a 12-11 win in one of the Triples. With Devon winning the bonus points in the Singles and Pairs the final score was Dorset 26 (193 shots) Devon 14 (172 shots).
It was also a tough day for the Devon A team. In the first session Devon drew one of the Singles 12-12 and narrowly won one of the Pairs 10-9. However defeats on the other two mats gave Dorset the advantage. However this advantage was wiped out in the second session where Devon won both of the Triples and one of the Fours meaning they only dropped 2 points the entire session. This left Devon leading at the half way stage 7-9. The third session was split evenly with both of the Devon Singles winning confidently, but both of the Pairs losing. However Dorset finished strongly and in the last session Devon only managed to win on one mat with one of the Fours winning 9-3, and Dorset won on the three other mats. With Devon gaining the bonus points in the Singles and Triples the final score was Dorset 21 (162 shots) Devon 19 (157 shots).
In the other ICC fixture in the group Somerset travelled to Carnmoggas to face Cornwall. The Cornwall Premier team beat Somerset 27-13. Whilst Somerset A beat Cornwall 25-15. With that result Devon Premier still top the group on shot difference with Devon, Dorset and Cornwall all on the same amount of points. Devon A sit second three points behind Somerset however a large gap is opening up between Devon and third place Dorset. The latest tables can be found here. The next ICC fixture is this Sunday where Devon host Cornwall at ISCA. The squad will be announced later in the week.
20/10/14 European Masters Review
